"Seventh Wave" is the opening song from the Devin Townsend album Ocean Machine: Biomech, released in 1997. It opens and ends with a sample of Devin reading excerpts from the poem "In Memoriam" by Alfred Lord Tennyson.

The original album version. After the opening vocal recitation, the main riff of the song begins, soon backed with various samples and rhythm changes; they resolve into the same riff, an octave down, in double time for the verses. This slows to regular time for the pre-chorus sections, then builds into the choruses. A bridge changes the key in a palm muted riff backing Devin's screams, then through a new riff of harmonized, wordless vocals before returning to a final pre-chorus and chorus. The final downbeat of the chorus ends the song with heavy keyboard ambience and textures; these eventually succumb to a reversed and manipulated version of the opening words that sound like a tape in reverse, ending the song.
Seventh Wave (Live)
Available on the Official Bootleg 2000 CD-R and DVD-R, as well as the data track on the deluxe Terria 2xCD. This was recorded on February 26, 1999 in Tokyo, Japan. It uses the same arrangement as the studio recording, following the pre-recorded "Unity" intro and flowing directly into "Regulator" afterward.
(Alfred Lord Tennyson quote: "O earth, what changes hast thou seen! There where the long street roars, hath been The stillness of the central sea. The hills are shadows, and they flow From form to form, and nothing stands; Like clouds they shape themselves and go.") Running away, running away Running away forever It was her only chance of finding home Running away, running away Running away together... With only thoughts of finding home I'll wait for the ocean to rise up And meet me as it rose up before (I'll know the time) I'll wait for the ocean to rise up And greet me as it rose up before (I'll know the year) Because you're never alone ...Even when you're alone You're never alone... Watch the seventh wave Running away, running away Running into the weather With only thoughts of finding home Running away, running away Running away forever I realize I'm on my own On my way pass it on On my way pass it on I'll wait for the ocean to rise up And meet me as it rose up before (I'll know the time) I'll wait for the ocean to rise up And greet me as it rose up before We're never alone Even when you're alone We're never alone... watch the ocean
